When we talk about Search Engine Optimization (SEO) for gutter companies, most think that you only need to make some changes on your website, and voila – you’ll be right at the top of the rankings. Certainly there are a lot of things you can do on your website that can improve your rankings, but your website is only part of the equation.
Think of SEO like a cooking recipe. There are a lot of different ingredients that go into making a business rank on Google. One of the core ingredients is what is known as “Off-Page SEO” – or things that impact your ranking that are NOT directly on your website.
The more that your gutter business appears across the internet, the more that Google recognizes your business as trusted and legitimate. This is especially true when other trusted sites link or refer to your website.
There is a large network of business directories online that Google trusts, and you want to make sure that your business appears in these directories. One thing to keep in mind, however, is that quality of directories will always be more important than quantity. Search engines will use the quality of links pointing to a website as an indicator of trust and authority.
This means that you need to get your website listed in directories that already have a high Domain Authority – which is essentially a trust ranking from Google.
One of the most important directories is actually by Google itself. You need to make sure that your Google My Business (GMB) listing for your gutter business is verified and accurate. Your search rankings on Google organic searches and Google Maps are directly related to your GMB listing. You can read more about this here.
Other high authority directories for gutter companies include Facebook, Yelp, HomeAdvisor, YellowBook, BBB, and others. You want to make sure that your gutter company appears in all of these directories, and that the name, address, phone number, and website match the information on your Google My Business listing.
This is as easy as signing up or logging in to these websites and creating accounts with the correct information. While simple, it can be time consuming to create listings, and even more time consuming to seek and out discover high-ranking directories.
In addition to getting linked from online directories, there are a lot of actions that you can take to get links to your website. No matter how you get these links, there are a lot of things that determine how much the link will help your SEO including the authority and trustworthiness of the source, relevance between your website and the source, the “freshness” of the link, and other factors.
Some ways to garner off-page links include:
Write guest blogs on high authority sites. Seek out and find high-authority blogs that can benefit from content about gutter services. This might include home improvement or DIY blogs. You’ll need to write relevant, high-quality content that links back to your business. For example: “Risks you take by having clogged gutters” or “How to prevent ice on damaged gutters.”
Ask customers or business partners to link your website. You can solicit reviews or links from customers that are happy with your gutter service. Alternatively, ask local business partners you work with or local business networks to link your website with a logo from their websites.
It takes a lot of time and commitment to improve off-page SEO, but the payoff is long-term and sustainable increases to your ranking on Google.
